Talk About: Just Diagnosed with Diabetes

"I am 56 and [was] diagnosed a week ago ... I have Type II and take a half a pill. I guess I'm not too bad off with a 170 reading, but I feel really picked on by my body. I took an introductory class at Kaiser last night and it seems I can eat most of the things I have always eaten, I just need to eat much, much, much less! I just really needed to find some place to feel sorry for myself for a minute where people might understand! Thanks for the shoulder." -- G.

"The good side is that the disease has forced me to live a healthy life style ..." "There is a good side to diabetes, too. I was diagnosed with Type II in 1971. At first, diet and strenuous exercise kept me in control. Now, 29 years later, I need Glucophage and DiaBeta to keep me in reasonable control (120-140). The good side is that the disease has forced me to live a healthy life style. At 62, I find I'm in much better health than many of my peers. I owe that to the disease! Sounds to me like you have the right idea on how to take care of yourself. Just never stop the education process." -- B.
