The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse explains that constipation occurs when an individual has three or fewer bowel movements per week. Constipation can also be defined by hard, dry stools that are difficult and painful to pass.
According to NDDIC, it is essential to move our bowels on a daily basis. If not, harmful toxins can build up and create bacteria which could lead to more serious illnesses such as diabetes, and chronic gas and bloating. An individual can experience constipation when stools pass too slowly through the large intestine. If the stool stays too long in the large intestine, the intestine will remove excess water making the stool hard, dry and difficult to pass.
NDICC explains that there are various lifestyle and dietary habits that may cause constipation. Some of these include:
- Changes to your normal diet, exercise or travel habits.
- Ignoring the need to move your bowels.
- Stress.
- Not drinking enough fluids.
- A side effect from taking medication or vitamins.
If you suffer from constipation or want to prevent getting constipation, NDDIC recommends some of the following remedies:
- Eating more foods that include fiber such as fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, and beans.
- Drinking plenty of fluids including water, and fruit and vegetable juices.
- Exercising at least 20 to 30 minutes every day.
- Only using laxatives if instructed by your doctor.
- Discussing the medications you are taking with your doctor to determine whether or not they are causing the constipation.
