FDA Puts Black Box Warning on Bowel-Clearing Drugs

WASHINGTON -- Federal health officials said they will add the sternest safety warnings available to drugs used before colonoscopies, following reports of kidney damage in several patients.

The Food and Drug Administration said it has received more than 20 reports of a serious form of kidney failure among patients taking the bowel-cleansing drugs, known as oral phosphate products.

The new boxed warning label will apply to Visicol and OsmoPrep -- both prescription tablets made by Salix Pharmaceuticals. The label warns that the drugs should be used with caution in patients older than 55, those who suffer from dehydration and kidney disease, and those who take medications that affect the kidneys.

Regulators said they are also concerned about the risks of over-the-counter bowel cleansers, such as Fleet Phospho-soda, made by C.B. Fleet Company Inc.

"There are many people who use these and use them fine," said Charles Ganley, who heads FDA's office of nonprescription products. "But there are people who are developing severe kidney injury, and it's important we try and identify who is at risk."

I have never used the pills always the liquid stuff, where you spend the afternoon drinking it every 15 minutes. When a diffeant way before my Prostate operation but that time I had to get up in the middle of the night to take the stuff. I have had it seems like meany colonscopes the worst part was the clean out the colon before hand. I have even had them done with out taking any medication, the proceedure is a piece of cake, it is the prep that is the problem. There is a little disconfort cause by the gas. I even had a colonscople done then went and had a barium enmeny xray, My colon was not ready for both needless to say and a mess was made in the xray room.

Will these same warnings be placed on the "colon cleanse" medications that some are using to jumpstart a weight loss regime ?

This is on something different. Do you know how safe having LipoSystem is? I had it done two months ago and I haven't felt very well, at least most of the time, plus I'm still bloated, lumpy and my stomach is tender. It obviously didn't work because my waist is larger than it was. The doctor told me I needed to work out for an hour and a half a day. This was when I went back to her after the surgery complaining about the results. Thank you
