Although I know did the best thing leaving their dad, raising kids on my own is an unbelievalbe struggle. At first we were a team, but as they get older it's so hard. I would love to hear anyone's coping skills in this area - I'm about tapped out and things just seem to keep getting worse.

Thought I'd write about my experience as a parent of a disabled son, and raising him on my own.Matthew will be 16 yrs old soon. I can't believe he will be that old! Seems like yeasterday he was an infant. Seems like yesterday, I was only 24. Makes me feel old, and even more screwed up, with time wasted and with the time that has taken my child to reach as far as he has become. He has autism. He is mildly affected, and he also is mildly mentally retarded. THe M.R. is harder to accept.

Everyone in my family is divorced. I don't have children or are divorced, but I have seen this situation over and over in the lives of my sisters. What I've seen is ......
small children make you happy..
then children grow, don't want to spend time with parents, can play parents against each other, and even divorced households fall apart. Further apart.
My best advice/opinion is to stay active in your child's life. Especially in the pre-teen/ teen years. Unfortunately, if you're divorced, if they live with you, then they're all yours. Imagine getting a child just twice a month and perhaps during school off times. Not much of a relationship can be built there. Also, unless your an unfit parent, don't let a child live with the other parent. Adolescents are never happy, and end up playing parents against each other for their temporary gains/tantrums. The absent father/mother always seems like the better one because they're not actually parenting. Do not be afraid to discipline. Do not let them go. Stay active in their lives. Go places. Camp, go to movies, make them stay home on weekends if it's not in the budget, have them take responsibility for keeping the home, make sure your child support is current with incomes/expenses, and be an example. Easier said than done. Best.
