Should I ask about someone's divorce?
I have kind of a sticky question. An acquaintance of mine recently got a divorce. I see her at church and we exchange smalltalk, but that's about it. My question is, should I bring up the subject? I don't know what to say. I hate to say, "Oh I'm so sorry!" since she might be relieved that it's over. (I don't know her husband at all.) But I certainly would never say "Congratulations!" I'm just worried that it's going to seem awkward not to bring it up, but I don't want to pry into her personal life either.
Asking????
Can't you just be a "friend" and ask her "how she's doing"?? If she wants to talk about it to you, she will! If not..I'm sure she'll let you know!
Say Nothing
I wouldn't say anything unless she brought it up. Then if she wanted to talk about it be there for her, listen to her and console her but I wouldn't be the one to bring it up.

If you don't ask, your friend may think you don't care. If you ask, your friend may think you are being nosy. So...use your instincts and choose the right time. I would want my friends to ask me. Go for it!

Probably depends on the depth of the relationship. I would say to be subtle and open. People going through this crisis want to talk but want to talk in the right place and time. Be ready to listen and understand. Be ready to commit to being part of their support if you go this route. This is such a traumatic time in the life for a person on the un-wanted divorce end. It was perhaps the most trying time I have ever had in my life.

I wouldn't make to big a thing out of it. You could just say, "I heard about you and your ex, let me know if you need anything." This way you acknowledge that you know what happened, which clears the air, and you offer her a friendly ear -- if she wants it.
