I was saddened to hear the news that Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives and Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs are divorcing. But I was encouraged that Eva made the decision to move forward after finding hundreds of texts from Parker to the wife of a Spurs teammate. The couple had been friends of theirs.
There is nothing in the news yet about actually infidelity, and we dont know what was in the texts, but it cant have been good news. It would be pointless to drag the marriage on after such a betrayal to both Longoria and Parkers former friend, who is already heartbroken by his wifes earlier decision to divorce him.
The problem with long-term relationships outside of marriage is that a husband (or wife) makes the decision to betray not just once to see what it would feel like, but over and over again. Every day Tony Parker woke up and decided to carry on with another woman was a new day he was not committed to his marriage.
And every day Eva Longoria did not know what was happening on the side in her marriage was a day she may have been confused by Parkers behavior because it did not line up with reality. Thats the real damage of infidelity. Everything you thought to be true about the person you love is now in question. Its not the love wound that is so painful; its the disorientation of how the world no longer makes sense. You question everything and everyone: If your husband can fool you, how stupid are you? It takes a long time to let gravity pull you back to earth after everything being flipped upside down.
