Downloading and Installing QuickTime 6.5 Player

This help file describes how to download and install the QuickTime 6.5 player on a PC with Windows.

Before you start:

  • Know your connection speed.
  • Make sure your PC operating system is Windows 98 or better.
  • Close all windows (exit all programs) except one browser.
  • You may want to print this help page, since you can't display it on your browser while installing QuickTime.

To start:

  • Go to the Apple QuickTime download page ( http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download ). This page has many buttons, links and products to buy. But if you want just the free version of QuickTime, find the "Download the free player" section.
  • Select your operating system
  • Select your language
  • Uncheck the "I would like to receive Apple news" box.
(Or check boxes to sign up for further promotional material and enter your name and email address.)
  • Click the "Download QuickTime" button. A "Congratulations" page will appear, and download will start automatically. If it does not, click the alternate link provided on the Congratulations page.

To proceed with the download:

  • A "Security Warning" window will open, asking "Do you want to install and run QuickTime Installer". Click "Yes".
  • The Installer interface will occupy the whole screen, displaying the title "QuickTime 6 Setup" in upper left corner.
  • A series of dialog boxes will appear. Follow the on-screen prompts, clicking "Next", "Agree" and "Continue" as necessary.
    • Go with the default installation location and default folder names unless you have a reason not to.
    • Select the minimum version of the QuickTime player—that should do fine.
    • Registration is not required—leave the input boxes blank if you wish.
  • Download and installation may take from 5 seconds (if you have broadband) to 35 minutes or longer (if you have a 56K connection). The installer will display a progress bar showing how much of the installation has completed.
  • A "QuickTime settings" window will open. It will ask for your connection speed.
    • Select your connection speed and click "Next".
    • For Browser Plugin, accept default values. Click "Next".
    • For FileType Associations, accept default values. Click "Next".
  • A "Finished" window will appear. Uncheck the two checkboxes and click "Close"
  • Congratulations! You have just installed the second-most downloaded software on the Internet.

Additional Notes:

  • Remember, you only have to download the QuickTime player once. Each QuickTime animation begins playing as soon as the browser receives the first few frames.
  • When launching QuickTime for the first time, a "MIME Type Configuration" warning box may open, as shown below. Check "Do not prompt in the future" and Click "Yes".

MIME Type Configuration warning: Some of the MIME types previously associated with the QuickTime plugin are currently associated with other applications. Should I restore these MIME type associations to QuickTime? (Yes/No)
  • If you don't hear sound during the animation, you can adjust the volume by clicking the volume control icon (
    Volume Control Icon
) on your taskbar. If you don't find the icon on your taskbar, you can put it there by checking a box on the sound control panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sound and Multimedia).
  • If you do not have a sound card the video will play silently, but you can view a subtitled version of each animation by clicking the link underneath the standard version of the animation.
  • If you have a Mac, a different operating system, an older vesion of QT installed, or a different browser, downloading and installing may involve different steps.
