Sherri Voted Off, Melissa Sedated: DWTS

Sherri Shepherd hung up her dancing shoes and headed back to "The View" after Tuesday night's voting bumped her from the season 14 competition on "Dancing With the Stars." An audible groan was heard among her fans in the ballroom audience and she couldn't stem the flow of tears. She did, however, regain her composure enough to give a gracious and inspiring loser's speech. Later, she recapped it on her Twitter feed: "Thx to every1 for your encouragement & votes. #DWTS is a memory I will cherish forever. I learned how to 'do it scared.' "

Melissa Gilbert, conspicuously absent from results nights after being rushed to the hospital with a concussion on Monday, was alert enough to do some tweeting of her own about Sherri's ouster: "I just watched my tivo'd #DWTS and I'm weeping. @SherrESgepherd I will miss you so much."

Yet whether the "Little House on the Prairie" star will be part of the proceedings as the season continues remains to be seen. Host Tom Bergeron explained that the reason she was MIA on Tuesday was that "on her doctor’s advice she’s taking a rest day,” but Melissa's partner, Maks Chmerkovskiy, hinted that one day off might not be enough. He said although he's looking forward to continuing on the show, Melissa “is a little sedated so she doesn't know what she's looking forward to.”

All that drama aside, the professional dancing on Tuesday was first rate, including a showy number by the cast of Dancing With the Stars: Live in Las Vegas. The highlight of the evening, though, was a smoldering Argentine tango performed by defending Mirror Ball champion Karina Smirnoff and one of ballet's greatest superstars, José Manual Carreño. The stunning duet was accompanied by the tango music of The Gotan Project, marking the Parisian band's U.S. television network debut. Before the dance began, backstage footage included a touching moment when Karina said that she and José came together through an organization "that helps kids to pursue their dreams with dance." She was referring to Dance Intervention, which Bergeron called her "passion project." A worthy cause indeed! Onward now to week 5. Will Melissa return? Will Gladys, at 68, keep wowing her fans? And who will be sent home? The saga continues . . .
