Have you seen those promos for Zumba? There’s a room packed with fit twenty- to thirty-year olds blissfully shaking their booties and getting into super shape. It looks like a lot of fun, but can people in their 50s and older join in safely? Yes, say the creators, because ZUMBO has a customized exercise program just for older adults.
Zumba, meaning “to move swiftly” with grace in Spanish, is a Latin-based aerobic exercise program that uses traditional Latin dances like the cha-cha, tango, salsa and samba, to create a high energy workout. The exercise routine geared to seniors is called the Gold class. In fact, it’s especially helpful for folks who have had joint replacement in knees and hips. Workouts can even be modified for those in wheelchairs.
The dances are easier to follow, have less changes in movements, are lower impact and target balance and coordination, two of the biggest concerns for seniors. It also builds muscle strength, increases bone density, and improves mobility, posture and coordination.
More good news: Unlike other exercise programs that people often get bored with—ZUMBA seems to keep the motivation going for participants of all ages, with fewer people quitting. Maybe that’s because you don’t need a partner and you can do it in the privacy of your own living room with a DVD. Or you can join a group at a dance studio, fitness center, YMCA or senior center. And, keep in mind, there’s no special equipment needed--just lightweight shoes that won’t slip off.
As always, please check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.
