Free Walking Program

Free Get-Fit Program

A health-insurance company has launched a nationwide senior walking program after an initial study in which participants burned nearly 3 million calories.

Humana, as part of its Medicare Advantage Program, is making the Humana Active Outlook Walking Program available at 17 Guidance Centers across the United States. Anyone can join, whether or not they are a Humana customer .

A company statement said that the Guidance Centers are in  Chicago, IL.; Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Dallas, TX.; Fort Lauderdale, FL.; Kansas City, MO.; Knoxville, TN; Las Vegas, NV.; Mesa, AZ.; Milwaukee, WI.; Minneapolis, MN.; Orlando, FL.; Peoria, IL.; and Tampa, FL. The program will be launched during the third quarter at new Humana Guidance Centers in Austin and San Antonio, TX.

The walking groups meet at least once a week at the Guidance Centers, and participants, who are given a pedometer, chart their progress in terms of the number of steps taken, the distance traveled and the number of calories burned. The pilot study showed that the 1,000 participants took 173.5 million steps, walked 66,624 miles (equivalent to 2.5 laps around the earth at the equator) and burned nearly 3 million calories.
