Dr. Frank Comstock obtained his medical training from Michigan State University, where he also completed residency training in emergency medicine. Dr. Comstock continues to practice emergency medicine today and is board certified in that specialty. He is President of Northwest Tucson Emergency Physicians and has been Medical Director for twenty years.

When Sugar Is Not So Sweet

In Part II of his Aging Well series, Dr. Frank Comstock looks at the role glucose plays in accelerating the aging process.

Our brains depend on a constant supply of glucose to function. We think and feel better when blood glucose levels are controlled. However, elevated glucose levels harm the body in a number of ways. High glucose levels damage cells via a process called glycation. Glycation occurs when glucose combines with proteins in cells and disrupts cell function. How to Slow the Aging Process

We live in a country with “the best medical care in the world,” so why is our health deteriorating? if Is it some type of genetic mutation? Can we blame our genes? Our parents? As it turns out, the more we learn about the genome and our “biological blueprint” the more we realize two very important factors: 1) our genes have changed less than 0.1% since our ancestors began walking upright millions of years before. 2) Most diseases, including many cancers, are the result of lifestyle, not genetics. Our genes represent potentiall, both good and bad.
