Questions to Ask When Selecting a Nursing Home |

- Does staff respond quickly to requests for assistance?
- Are residents involved in a variety of activities?
- What are the base costs? What are add-on costs (e.g., laundry, bandages, beauty salon)? How will you meet expenses?
- Is the facility Medicare or Medicaid certified?
- How will you monitor your loved one's care?
- Is there an adequate staff-to-resident ratio?
- Is privacy respected?
- Is there a qualified social worker on staff?
- Does the home have contact with community groups such as pet therapy programs and Scouts?
- Does the resident or family participate in developing the care plan?
- Is there fresh water at bedside?
- How many residents share a bathroom? Do bathrooms have hand grips or rails near all toilet and bathing areas? Is there a call button inside?
- Who plans the meals? How are special dietary needs met?
- What arrangements are made for honoring religious preferences?
- Is there a family council for residents? When does it meet and who coordinates it?
- Is there a physician available for emergencies?
- What is the billing procedure? Will you be informed of any changes?
- How is personal laundry handled? Will you need to do it yourself?
- Is there a system to protect wanderers?
