By Delaina Dixon
After a few days at New York's fabulous Fashion Week, I am starting to get a grasp on what designers want to put me in next Spring. Keeping in mind I am a petite, curvy, 40-something woman whose style tends to fall on the conservative side, there were a few pieces sent down the runway this season that brought a smile to my face. I was happy to see a return to the ladylike fashions of the fifties at the Tracy Reese show. I am coveting a champagne-colored draped dress that gathers into a dropped bow at the waistline, Tracy's modern-day interpretation of a party frock worn nearly 60 years ago. -
Diane von Furstenberg
Von Furstenberg, who designed one of the most iconic dresses ever in the '70s wrap dress, brought the classic style up to date with a collection of her signature style. Most beautiful: an all-white, billowy wrap dress. -
Donna Karan's Yellow Dress
Several spring collections are offering lightened-up versions of the royal blue and rust we're sporting this fall through a turquoise blue and coral combination. Of course spring wouldn't be spring without warming shades of yellow and earth renewing greens. Donna Karan combines the two in a diaphanous waist-length jacket paired with a full skirt, creating a look that resembles an upside down tulip. -
Donna Karan's Tribal Dress
For other designs in her collection, Karan drew on her own experience. I love her tribal-print dress that snakes around the neck, a look inspired by Donna's earthquake relief work trips to Haiti, the designer has shared. -
Carolina Herrera
Of course, if I just want to be able to reach into my closet and pull out one designer piece that will make me look effortlessly fabulous, it's this dress by Carolina Herrera, as she serves up her take of the current color-blocking trend. The black and white striped sheath on the runway seems a bold pattern that's a bit on the edgy side for the designer, but it still gives off a crisp, pulled together air that is so classic of Carolina's style.
