The Budget Fashionista's Five Fab Picks for Fall

"Style isn't something you can buy, but it is something you can develop," shares Kathryn Finney, author of How to Be a Budget Fashionista: The Ultimate Guide to Looking Fabulous for Less (Random House, 2006). "I live for the pursuit of a great deal," she says, and her savvy shopping and style expertise have landed her spots on CNN and TTie Today Show.
After receiving a master's in international public health at Yale University, she started thebudgetfashionista.com, a blog about smart shopping and fit tips. Finney had no idea she would develop a cult following, much less put out enough material to fill a book. But who doesn't want to know how to score knockout designer goods or put together a superfly wardrobe for less than $200? Finney got that degree from Yale, but for now, this "hobby" is a full-time gig.
Finney's Fab Picks for Fall
- Something red. "With all the gray and black going on this fall, a
red shoe or handbag is the perfect accent. Check out New York &
Company or H&M for crimson accessories." - Animal prints. "They never go out of style ... But play
it safe with an accessory, because the clothing can look cheap. Turn to
Ann Taylor or Filene's Basement for animal print accents." - A great dress. "Dresses are ready-made outfits. Target, Zara and monifc.com, or igigi.com for plus sizes, are excellent dress spots."
- Boots. "They're sleeker this year. Get a pair with a sensible heel so you can maneuver through bad weather."
- A solid winter coat. "If you're going to splurge on
anything, let it be a good coat. However, it's best to buy one
off-season, when serious markdowns are available. Saks Off Fifth and
Neiman Marcus Last Call are good places to shop for deals."
