12b-1 fees

Annual fees passed on by some mutual funds to their shareholders to cover the costs of trying to attract new investors; named for the SEC rule allowing such fees. A 12b-1 fund that does not charge either a front-end load or a back-end load can call itself a no-load fund only if its 12b-1 fees do not exceed 0.25% of the fund's value; otherwise, it is a level-load fund.
