What Do We Do With The House?

My spouse wants to divorce me

Tom Clark had to get out of his house in a hurry. His marriage had just come apart and he quickly found a condominium through a newspaper ad in his New Jersey town. "The first good deal I saw, I bought it," he said.

Though Tom was the main breadwinner in the house, he agreed to be the one to move out. A sense of fairness motivated him to let his ex-wife stay in the house. Tom stayed in New Jersey at his construction job another year before moving back to his hometown of Bozeman, Montana, to make a new start. Again, he found an affordable condominium and stayed there with his young son until he could find a house.

Looking back, he has no regrets how he handled the situation--even letting his ex-wife keep the house in New Jersey. "It was the right thing to do," says Tom, 46. "Financially, you just fall apart. But the wisdom you've attained over the years comes back once your head clears."
