A good planner will build a lifelong relationship with you. It is the only way for them to see if you're on track. If your relationship with your planner has lapsed you should think about getting back in touch or finding another. You could make all the decisions yourself, but you'd have to commit to keeping current on the new laws. It's a huge investment of time.
