Careers for Fun and (Some) Money
From: Vice President Information Technology--To: Owner of Charter Fishing Business
This technology VP wanted to use his retirement to explore what he loved most: deep-sea fishing. Using his analytical skills and the help of a consultant to make sure he fully understood the risks of a new undertaking, he researched the cost of owning and outfitting tourist charter fishing boats, hiring a staff, and marketing his new business. He exploited low cost advertising on the Web, making sure his tours came up in search engines and on related travel sites, and also used 1-800 phone numbers and yellow page ads in various northern home towns to market his tours to people planning their vacations.
Initial Start-Up Cost: $15,000 personal money plus bank loan.
Result: a new career he loved.

From: For-Profit Company President To: Executive Director, Non-Profit
This former gourmet coffee exec decided to take the plunge into the nonprofit world after a board member solicited his expertise in improving the organization. What he had to offer: a strong operations background, skill in managing people creatively, and excellent board facilitation skills--not to mention a great sense of humor and a deep interest in the community he was serving. Interestingly enough, people, commitment, and operations skills, rather than a fundraising background, helped him make the final cut, acing out candidates with stronger nonprofit backgrounds.
Cost: research, good networking, and understanding how to package his skills for the new, target environment.
Result: a career that lets him give back to the community.
