Address Your Distressed Tresses

After all that teasing, spraying, and styling you've been doing, your hair could probably use a vacation. So it's time, says beauty expert Jenni Baden Howard, to give your tresses some much-needed pampering, starting with a good cleaning.

"Hair, like skin, needs deep-cleaning from time to time, to remove all traces of product buildup and to restore softness and shine," she says. Start by washing your hair with a shampoo specifically formulated to do just this.

And don't skip on conditioner, Baden Howard advises -- "apply lashings of it, and use a wide-toothed comb to get it right through to the ends, and leave on for a few minutes." A daily conditioner with jojoba oil is useful for extra softness and shine.

Lastly, she says, give your hair a rest by keeping the dryer on low heat and medium speed -- "more time-consuming, but your hair will look and feel less frazzled." It's best to let your hair dry naturally whenever possible, "and work through a styling mousse, gel or lotion for control."
