QUESTION: How can I prevent dandruff?
ANSWER: Dandruff occurs when the scalp sloughs off dead cells at a faster-than-normal rate. Many experts believe that a yeast-like organism found on the scalp is to blame.
While it's difficult to completely prevent dandruff -- the yeast culprit is present on everyone's scalp, although it doesn't always cause flakes -- there are effective ways to treat it when it does occur. Shampoos containing the ingredients zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, sulfur, or coal tar inhibit the growth of the yeast. Use these shampoos once a week to start; if your problem persists, increase your frequency of use.
For very difficult cases of dandruff, a dermatologist can prescribe a stronger shampoo, or provide you with anti-inflammatory corticosteroids to help clear up the condition.
