Women Are Taking a Shine to Hair Shimmers

Shimmer and shine are all the rage this holiday season.

Even when it comes to your tresses.

Hair Shimmers are the latest in the sparkle trend, joining sequins and rhinestones as a must-have accessory. The tinsel-like Shimmers are individual strands of a high-quality, heat-resistant polyester fiber. They come in 15 colors from chocolate brown to shamrock green.

"It can be really bold or it can be really subtle," says Maritza G. Bettigole, a Gadabout, Ariz., educator and color specialist. Though Bettigole has been adding Shimmers to hair informally for about a month, Gadabout Salon Spas launched Hair Shimmers in all its locations just last week. University of Arizona student Hillary Kresse, 19 who had six sparkling gold shimmers tied into her blonde hair, says the look is really popular in her sorority.

Bettigole says that most customers have been getting six Shimmers added to their hair. People have been pretty conservative and going for colors close to their own natural hair.

"It's fun," Bettigole says. "It's just something a little different."

It takes about 10-15 minutes to add the Shimmers, which cost $4 per strand application. Each Hair Shimmer strand is carefully looped around three individual hair strands and then knotted into the hair. They can last six weeks, or you can carefully pull them out if you get tired of them earlier. Once they're in, hair can be curled or flat-ironed like normal.

The only thing you shouldn't do is add all-over color, which strips the Shimmer strand and actually turns it silver.

Hey, some of us might have, um, natural Shimmers already.
