depressed male teen... prozac is not working?
i've been on prozac for over 6 months and it has not made me feel any better. I'm on 20mg. I've been having suicidal thoughts and it has actually made my depression worse. What can i do? What should i tell my doctor? Should i get off of it and try another medication? Has anyone from experience tried prozac and then tried another antidepressant with better results? Please help i'm 19 years old i'm 19 years old

Dude get out more eat Mexican Food and Drink Tequila. That's a sure depression stopper. Stay thirsty my friend.
Honestly. You should immediately talk to ur doctor and try gettin off those pills. Also another suggestion is talkin to a friend or family member about how your feeling. Dont let those thoughts get to you. If you feel bad best thing to do is write everything down in a journal or somethin that always helps out. Talk to someone, write it down, cry if you have to
Yes, call your doctor and ask for something different. There are many antidepressants, some don't work while others do. Everyone is wired so differently. Counseling helps so much too! There are places that will probably see you for free if you don't have insurance. Being 19 is hard, you are not alone and it's okay to ask for help!!! Most people do through this at one time or another!
BISMILLAH - in the name of ALLAH (GOD) --------------------------------------… i don't know why u have to be on such meds while u r only 19, doctors these days r concerned in making money more than heping someone, i want to tell u one thing which is 100% authentic, if you sincerely search for a solution you will find it inshALLAH(CREATOR willing) since u r suicidal, then i sincerely advise you as i would to my own brother/sister, that don't take any such step, know that the one who commits suicide goes directly to hell, so don't even think of that road, can you sustain the pain of burning your finger for only one minute, think eternity? Please be patient, and try doing the right thing inshALLAH(CREATOR willing), try this, sincerely cry to THE ONE WHO has created u, and ask HIM for guidance and help, do it sincerely ""only"" to the ONE WHO has created you(if u can, choose the time before dawn in the night to do this), and don't bring the thoughts of asking anyone else that was created, know that prophet Jesus(pbuh) was created as well. Trust me you will feel the lightness in your soul and will be relieved inshALLAH(CREATOR willing), going further i would advise you following: 2nd for depression, watch the following video, are the people in this video seem depressed or they seem grateful for what THE CREATOR has given them? Watch them and compare yourself to them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB71vFTYWsM But most importantly, see your problem is related to not having a correct motivational factor in life if there's a correct one, you don't live a life of depression but are energetic and charged up to work for it, it might not make sense now, but if you read thru and think over it, it will inshALLAH(CREATOR willing). I would advise you following(if trying something unique and different is not odd for you): Listen to this song, this takes u in a totally different dimension, but listen and watch both, and then think about what the purpose of our life should be and is yours on that course, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1aXR7ejw2E Do you know about 'cat stevens' the famous singer of the 70s, now he is known as 'yusuf islam,' i would advise you watch his interview on youtube, he used to be on drugs and wasn't happy with his life even with ton of money, but now has transformed to a way of life which he is content with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcgCdn8I8kU A similar ordeal of rapper loon, this guy was with p-diddy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yoi0mU4hTB4 read the biographies of the people at following site, see the state they were in. These people (even though some of them were very young) faced trials and persecution were socially cut off and were hated initially, but emerged as successful ones(praises to THE CREATOR ALONE for that), and made history, wrote new chapters in the books of ethics and morality, reached to the top, yet were very humble but just, the rich and strong who would want to exploit the weak would be threatened by them but the weak and poor will feel secure with them. http://web.youngmuslims.ca/online_library/companions_of_the_prophet/index.htm trust me there is a solution for all of our problems ALHAMDULILLAH(praises to THE CREATOR only), but we need to knock the right door."
I had major problems with all of the antidepressants. why not try therapy instead? I think I may have answered you before, but maybe your question is just similar to another one. Try therapy & self-help strategies. Antidepressants function no better than placebo in most patients (google Kirsch antidepressants and Ioannidis antidepressants – they are both mainstream researchers). Antidepressants usually cause sexual dysfunction, so most won't stay on them long term, but then some people get severe withdrawal symptoms. Generic Practical Depression tips (PRINT THEM OUT): The library has self-help books on depression. Many meds cause or worsen depression, including birth control, blood pressure, pain, acne, antipsychotic, anxiety (benzos) or sleeping medications, alcohol, illicit drugs and MANY others. Hypothyroidism mimics depression . Too little sleep, or sleep disorders like sleep apnea, or interrupted sleep (crying baby, barking dog) can cause depression. If your depression is worse in winter, use a light box (10,000 Lux (light intensity) at about 20” - about $300 online, you don't need full spectrum, Sunray is a good brand). I have extra windows, painted the walls peach & yellow & have a skylight. There's a link to a cheaper lightbox & more info at psycheducation.org. Also you can try 1000 to 2000 IU of Vitamin D in winter. It may work, or may be placebo treatment. Try meditation like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery. See The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne. Free 15 minute guided imagery at healthjourneys.com and many free meditations at youtube. Go out with friends, & if you don't have any, join a club e.g. hobby club, bowling league & MAKE yourself go. “Isolating” makes depression worse! Exercise 1/2 hour a day, & anytime you feel depressed or anxious. LOTS OF RESEARCH SUPPORTS THIS as the most effective depression treatment of all. Insomnia?: Go to bed & get up the same time each day, even weekends. Don't use your bedroom to watch TV, read or use the computer. Don't do stuff that revs you up before bed, like exercising & using the computer. Light from computer screens & TV wakes you up. Blue light is the worst offender – dim the lights and use an old-fashioned incandescent bulb the last hour. Make the bedroom very dark, even cover up the clock. Mask disturbing sounds with a fan or try soundsleeping.com or youtube, etc. Avoid caffeine after noon. Put colorful, happy things around the house. Do nice things for yourself. Make a list of things that make you happy, like: bread fresh from the oven, the crisp sound of a saltine cracker breaking, fresh sheets on the bed, touching frost on the windowpane, etc. Read that list when you are down. Use comforting scents. I like vanilla & cloves. Work on time management if you are overwhelmed. Cut back on other responsibilities so you can spend more time with friends & family. Ask for help with chores. Spend more time with your pet, if you have one. DON'T listen to sad music! Listen to upbeat stuff- same with movies & novels. DISTRACT yourself. Read a novel, watch a comedy, go out with friends, play cards or a video game, whatever keeps your mind busy. Volunteer. Helping others makes you feel better about yourself & you make a difference, too. If you are religious, your religion may help keep you involved in the community. Put a half-smile on your face. Changing your expression is proven to help change mood. Try free computerized cognitive behavioral therapy at moodgym.anu.edu.au. Also, if you have an abuse history, it is likely to be a major cause of your depression. If suicidal (not just “suicidal ideation,” but you are impulsive or have a plan), find a community hospital with inpatient behavioral health (yellow pages). Don't call 911 unless you have hurt yourself, because the police come.
