Questions About Fibromyalgia
I need some suggestions?
I used to be a teacher and was fairly active chasing after pre-k children. I used to walk a lot too. I broke my ankle a year and 7 months ago and it never healed. Since that time I have gained over 50 lbs. since I have been mostly laying in bed and walking very little. I had my third surgery on my ankle this past October and am still trying to walk without pain. The last doctor fused my ankle together. I HATE being so over weight. I am about 100 lbs overweight now and I can't stand to look at myself in a mirror but because of my ankle and because I also have fibromyalgia and arthritis in my hips, and knees, along with the nerve damage in my foot and ankle, it is impossible for me to walk much further then a few feet at a time without experiencing severe pain. It was difficult to lose weight when I was mobile but now it is even harder. If you have any suggestions to help me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and comments.
The ONLY way to lose weight and keep it off forever, is to change the lifestyle habits that got you overweight in the first place. If you don't change your lifestyle habits, you will gain all the weight back after you finish your diet. I know first hand, I have done it many times in my past.
At my peak weight, I weighed 355 lbs. I was miserable physically and mentally. But then, much to my surprise, I saw someone in this forum recommend a $5 Ebook called, "Lifestyle Changes That Will Keep You Healthy and Fit". So I decided to read it.
I am so thankful i did. In the past two years I have lost 160 lbs due to two major lifestyle changes I made. The best part is, I am not struggling to keep the weight off because I lost it in a way that was normal to the way I live my life. I didnt diet. I didn't kill myself with exercise.
Something that I think you will benefit from this ebook is when the author talks about incorporating exercise into your daily life. So many people don't have time to workout or just don't like working out, so what can be done is incorporate some exercise into your daily schedule. This worked amazingly for me. I bet it would help you also.
As far as what exercises you could do that wouldnt stress or cause pain to your ankle, you had better ask your Doctor to be sure about the safety of the exercise.
I strongly recommend this ebook. Send me an email if you want the web address to order it. You won't find it on google.
Hi!
First of all, I'm so sorry that you've been injured so badly. I can't even imagine living with such pain and losing my mobility. The feeling of frustration and helplessness must be overwhelming.
Here are my thoughts on your specific situation. In most cases, the single biggest factor in weight gain or weight loss is going to be your diet. Even with limited physical activity, it is possible (please check with your doctor) that you could still be losing weight with a healthy, low fat diet (definitely not talking about starving yourself here, I'm talking about eating a healthy amount of calories per day).
On the exercise front, I'm not very familiar with fibromyalgia but after a reading quickly about it...yikes. Sounds awful. I don't know if it causes pain in your entire body or not, but I would just say if it is limited to your lower body, there are plenty of exercises that can be done (and burn calories) using your upper body only. There is a machine that looks almost like a bicycle, but you turn the pedals with your hands while sitting down. If you had/use a wheel chair, pushing it around can be exercise and there are others.
Having said all of that, I would think this would be a great conversation to have with your doctor or with any physical therapists you might be seeing. They would have a lot of experience in this area.
