If you’ve been tempted to try the Mexican dietary supplements Reumofan Plus and Reumofan Plus Premium, don’t. In a strongly worded “safety alert”, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers about the potential health risks of these “natural” products marketed as treatments for arthritis, muscle pain, osteoporosis, bone cancer, and other conditions.
The FDA states that the supplements contain “several potentially harmful active pharmaceutical ingredients that are not listed on the product labels.”The release from the FDA goes on to report that the agency has received “dozens of additional adverse event reports, including death and stroke, associated with the use of Reumofan Plus since the agency issued its first warning about the product on June 1, 2012.” Other reports include liver injury, severe bleeding, sudden worsening of glucose (sugar) control, weight gain, swelling, leg cramps and withdrawal syndrome, and adrenal suppression.
The FDA advises that if you are currently taking these products or have recently stopped taking them, you “should immediately consult a health care professional.” The agency also notes that consumers “should not buy or start using these products.”
File that one under “goes without saying”!
