Eating Vegetables Gives You a Tan

A new study shows that when it comes to getting a healthy glow, lying in the sun (or a tanning bed) isn't the answer. Actually, eating your vegetables is more likely the thing to give skin some color. Really!

The study, led by Dr. Ian Stephen at The University of Nottingham, compared the skin of people who eat carotenoid-rich vegetables against those who spend time tanning. Both cause the skin to darken in color, but when participants were asked which type of glow was more attractive, most preferred the one caused by eating vegetables! 

"Most people think the best way to improve skin color is to get a suntan, but our research shows that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is actually more effective," Stephen said.

The research found that a diet rich in fruits and veggies causes a more golden skin color due to carotenoids antioxidants that help protect against damage from stress and toxins. An added bonus: carotenoids also help maintain healthy immune and reproductive systems.

Carrots

Tomatoes

Sweet Potato

Kale

Broccoli

Spinach

Red Peppers
