Emergency Preparedness for Boomers

With news of the epic Colorado wildfires and the torrential floods across the country dominating the headlines, we at ThirdAge want to give you a heads up on how to be ready to survive if a disaster should strike in your area. The Centers for Disease Control has a portal called "Emergency Preparedness for Older Adults" that provides links to information, tools, and resources regarding "all-hazard emergencies." You'll find advice about dealing with extreme heat, floods, earthquakes, power outages, and fires as well as tips on winter perils in case you really want to plan ahead.

You'll also be able to download PDFs, including one from the American Red Cross called "Disaster Preparedness for Seniors by Seniors" and another from the Administration on Aging's National Family Caregiver Support Program called "Just in Case: Emergency Readiness Older Adults and Caregivers."

Another feature on the site is a brief overview of some of the state and federal laws that may apply to older adults, public health, and preparedness and response activities.

There's much more on the site as well. We hope you'll hop on over and take some time to learn how to ensure a safe summer and beyond for you and yours!
