There are different kinds of moles which may appear at any time during life. It is possible that some moles are caused by sun damage to the skin, so avoiding excess exposure to the sun might help prevent their appearance. However, facial moles are probably genetically determined and so cannot be prevented. It is possible to have moles removed by a cosmetic surgeon, but this may leave a scar. Unusual moles should be examined by a dermatologist to check for any precancerous condition.

What is Moles

Moles are small growths on the skin. They typically appear as light to dark brown spots on the skin that are either flat or raised. Most people have benign moles, which are harmless.

Moles that become atypical (called dysplastic nevi) can eventually become Melanoma. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer. Moles that change or look atypical need to be evaluated by a dermatologist.
