Sensitivity

One of the most common causes of tooth sensitivity is abraded tooth surface due to overactive brushing or irritation from the grip of a partial denture. Erosion can also lead to tooth sensitivity; this appears mostly near the gum line and occurs naturally.

Avoid chewing on hard objects such as paper clips, hairpins, pens, and toothpicks, which causes tooth abrasion. Construction workers, carpenters, and garment workers who hold nails or pins between their teeth may also find that their tooth enamel is ridged with abrasions.

Even toothpaste containing harsh chemicals or grit can cause sensitivity. It is vital that your dentist determines the cause of the abrasion before treating the problem. For example, many people in midlife find that a brushing lesson from their dentist, combined with using an electric toothbrush and low-abrasion toothpaste, is a highly effective way to increase dental comfort and hygiene.

Awkwardly fitting partial dentures must be adjusted to prevent further wear and tear on the teeth. While slightly abraded tooth surfaces can be smoothed, special fluoride applications or mouth rinses may temporarily soothe sensitive teeth. Low-abrasion toothpastes such as Sensodyne, Thermodent, and Grace contain ingredients that help minimize the sensitivity of abraded and eroded teeth.

Those with sensitive teeth should also avoid extremely hot or cold drinks, as well as acidic citrus fruits such as lemons and limes. Vinegar and highly pickled foods can also bother those with sensitive teeth.
