Does Massage Lead to More Damage if You Have Arthritis?
Question: Does massage hurt you more if you have arthritis? Can you hurt your bones or joints more if you massage the hot spots on your body?
Answer: No, massage does not hurt you more if you have arthritis as long as you have a knowledgeable, professional, and sensitive therapist.
In fact, massage can be quite helpful as it increases joint mobility and blood flow. The key is to have a massage therapist who works slowly and knows how to move the affected joints without causing pain. As a rule of thumb, I say that if it hurts, or the pressure is too great, ask the therapist to work less deep or with less pressure. There is no evidence that actually massaging the spots that are painful can cause any increasing damage to those areas.
