Improving Motion and Decreasing Pain in the Shoulder
Question: I am 54 and arthritis, along with my active life, has destroyed my shoulder joint. The doctors say that I need total replacement. I am in pain and my range of motion is way down. I want to continue my active lifestyle. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
Answer: You may be surprised by my answer, but I think a total shoulder replacement may do the trick. A patient with eroded joint space, lost range of motion, and chronic pain has the type of problem that is correctable by surgery. After surgery, you can have physical therapy, which will teach you how to enhance the range of motion of your new joint and get back to your active lifestyle. You and your doctors may wish to pursue this option.
