Coping with Nightly Leg Pain

Question:

When I go to bed at night I have a terrible pain in my hip, which travels to my knee and down my leg. It comes and goes from day to day, but it keeps me awake at night. What can I do?

Answer:

My first suggestion would be to see your doctor to diagnose the cause of this pain. It could be anything from muscle spasms to an impingement of the nerve root in your spinal canal.

After you have a diagnosis, there are a number of things you can do to help with the pain. Everything from acupuncture to massage, stretching, breathing, meditation, and exercise would be important. You may want to try my four-point program of nutritional therapy, physical therapy, medication, and mental and spiritual pain control, as outlined in my book, The Pain Cure (Warner Books, 2000). But to reiterate, I suggest you visit your family physician for a diagnosis.
