Should I Brace My Arthritic Knee?
Question: Can a brace help alleviate pain in an osteoarthritic knee?
Answer: I believe that using a brace to stabilize an osteoarthritic knee is useful for some people over a short time period. However, I wouldn't depend on it for long-term use, since a brace by nature limits range of motion. Eventually, this will markedly reduce stability in your knee, which will compromise your activity level. Since physical activity is one of the key healing modalities in osteoarthritis, bracing your knee, although it may have short-term benefit, is not something that I recommend in the long run.
