Water Exercises for Arthritis
Question: What would be a good water exercise program for arthritis?
Answer: Water exercise is outstanding for arthritis. The best exercises are those that involve mobility of your large joints -- the shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, elbows, wrists and neck. In nice warm water, rotate these major joints, first in one direction and then in the other. Start off slow in small circles, then increase their circumference. You can also grab on to the side of the pool with your hands, stretch out and kick. This exercise is very good because it increases your general energy level. Finally, if your pool is large enough, swim laps back and forth at a comfortable pace.
I suggest you call the leading health club in your area, which should have a certified trainer experienced in water exercises. Have the trainer take you through a routine once or twice, then do it on your own. You can also call your local arthritis foundation.
