What Is Glucosamine Sulfate?

Question: What is glucosamine sulfate and how does it work?

Answer: Beneficial effects reported for glucosamine sulfate include anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory properties and an ability to stimulate cartilage producing cells (chondrocytes) to produce an important component of cartilage (proteoglycan). Although a number of clinical trials show glucosamine sulfate was more effective than a placebo in controlling osteoarthritis symptoms, these studies have met criticism from the scientific community for consisting of too few patients (among other design flaws). Reported side effects have included heartburn, constipation, and/or nausea. While glucosamine sulfate is a promising treatment for osteoarthritis, its safety and efficacy need to be proven by larger scientific studies.
