Does Working Out Cause Swelling and Pain?

Question: I have morning swelling in my right hand (wear braces on both hands to sleep) and my knees hurt constantly. I have little strength in my hands or joints and I work out.... When I work out I hurt but am still able to do most stretches and exercises, as long as I am slow and careful. Does working out cause these types of symptoms?

Answer: Working out, using the proper equipment and technique, should not cause swelling or pain. If your knees are hurting, try to stick to exercises that strengthen the quadriceps muscle (the large muscle in the front of the thigh), and avoid high-impact loading activities such as high-impact aerobics.
