Hair: Changes to Expect in Your 50s

Did you know there are two products that are scientifically proven to increase hair growth? Read on for more...

Your hair may be going gray or white. It may also be thinning, thickening, or falling out. Some people in their 50s find that their hair gradually changes shape by growing straighter or curlier. All of these changes are normal parts of healthy aging.

Graying
The number of melanocytes, the cells that govern skin and hair pigment, decreases as we age. This decrease may cause our hair to lose color and/or turn gray.

Balding
Male pattern baldness is common in the 50s and is determined by genetics. Women can also inherit the gene for baldness.

Thinning Hair
At this life stage, the rate of hair growth slows and the number of hair follicles we have decreases. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies may also lead to thinning hair, as can long-term use of corticosteroid drugs (such as prednisone).

Unwanted Hair
Hormone fluctuations in both men and women may lead to unwanted hair growth, particularly on the chin, eyebrows, and other facial areas and in the nose and ears.Next Page >
