Prostate Health: The Facts That Can Change Your Life

Tucked beneath the bladder and wrapped around the urethra, the unassuming little prostate gland would hardly draw the public's attention except for one thing: A man's prostate is more likely than all his other internal organs to develop a malignancy.

In fact, prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among American men, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), which projects that 180,400 new cases will be diagnosed and 31,900 men will die of the disease nationwide in 2000. Prostate cancer rates increase with age; more than 75 percent of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over age 65, according to the ACS. Even benign abnormalities of the prostate are surprisingly common and can hamper a man's lifestyle.
