Humans have been feeling stressed-out ever since adrenaline energy surges allowed our ancestors to outrun attackers or triumph in battle.
Compared to today's multitasking, time-challenged, cyber-stressing baby boomers, however, cave people led relatively stress-free lifestyles. "Between family and financial demands, working overtime, rapidly changing technologies, corporate downsizing, and caregiving for older relatives, people in midlife are struggling with more stressors than previous generations have ever experienced," says stress management expert Peter Lambrou, Ph.D., a clinical and consulting psychologist at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California.
Studies published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research and other medical journals indicate that life stress appears to have intensified dramatically since 1970. "Feeling stressed is not a sign that you are ill or losing your mind," says Dr. Lambrou, who, with George Pratt, Ph.D., co-wrote Instant Emotional Healing, (Broadway Books, 2000).
