Talk About: "I Must Eat Sweets"

"I can't stop the craving for sweets ... it has become very addictive and not healthy emotionally and physically for me ... can you help me please!" -- K.

Nutritionist Susan Mitchell, Ph.D., R.D., responds:
" ... Cravings for sweets can become almost like an addiction in that the more you have, the more you typically want and it's hard to break the habit of all the sugar. It's important to look at WHY you're craving.

"Most people eat for emotions ... for comfort when they're upset and angry, sad or lonely, even depressed. Ask yourself why you are reaching for food. Are you truly hungry or just trying to satisfy an emotional need?

"Instead of reaching for food, replace that habit with a more positive one. Read the paper, take a walk, etc., but get your mind off food. Take the control of the fork back.
