Fish Oils Hailed for Hearts

A health supplement manufacturer says its clinical studies support long-held beliefs that Omega-3 fatty acid supplements -- fish oils -- can help reduce the chances of getting heart disease and can have a positive effect on joints and cartilage.

The Ocean Essentials Web site, devoted to selling Omega-3 in its product line, says the firm's study indicates such acids can cut heart disease-related death by up to 30 percent. And the American Dietetic Association's Ruth Carey says most Americans don't eat enough fish and the human body cannot produce the necessary supplements.

Ocean Essentials makes marine-based supplements featuring the Omega-3's eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexanoic acid (DHA) and glucosamine. It uses shellfish and other cold water fish in the manufacturing process.

The company's product lines include Brain Health, to promote mental function; Heart Health for normal blood triglycerides and healthy blood flow; Joint Health for joint mobility; and Balanced Health which promotes all-around health. Cartilage Health, which contains the Omega-3 glucosamine, is offered to promote healthy joints and cartilage.
