Helping Spring Gardens

Spring has officially arrived. It's time to turn mind and hand to making things bloom and the experts at GardenGuides are eager to help design that dream garden, advise on what grows best when and where, and share the advantages (and disadvantages) of producing your own vegetables for next winter.

GardenGuides offers advice on annuals ranging from African daisies to zinnias, and perennials from bear's breeches (acanthus) to nosebleed (yarrow). Charts are available as well as information on fertilizing, composting, pruning, side dressing and winter protection.

Herb gardens in particular are growing in popularity, but there's a lot more to it than sticking a few sprigs in the ground and waiting for nature to take its course.

GardenGuides is on hand with guidance about feeding the delicate plants ("a rule of thumb is half the recommended strength"), although basil, chives and parsley are exceptions -- it's all handy and helpful, particularly to the newcomer to gardening.
