If you are over 50 then you probably remember where you were on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. The accomplishment was a testament to the power of dreaming big, articulating a goal and marshalling the forces to acheive it.

Now, less than 50 years after JFK made the committment to put a man on the moon, President Obama has made a much more down-to-earth, and immediate goal: health care reform. "I suffer no illusions that this will be an easy process. It will be hard. But I also know that nearly a century after Teddy Roosevelt first called for reform, the cost of our health care has weighed down our economy and the conscience of our nation long enough. So let there be no doubt: health care reform cannot wait, it must not wait, and it will not wait another year."-– President Barack Obama, February 24, 2009

While the public has voiced support for universal health care, many in the chattering classes argue that Obama's health care reform is too expensive, too difficult to acheive. Health care reform is necessary in this country because the costs have gotten out of the control and the insurance companies are in control, which is not how it should be. We need to put greater emphasis on prevention and encourage doctors to not blindly prescribe medication when there could be less harmful ways of treating the condition.
