US Senate meets into the night to resolve debt ceiling impasse

The US Senate continued to meet in negotiations as the sun set on the Capitol, July 30, 2011, on Capitol Hill, in Washington, DC. The impasse between the Republican-controlled House and the Democratic-controlled Senate forced a rare late night weekend session and a post-midnight vote on the debt ceiling, as time dwindles to a deadline August 2 for an agreement to prevent a possibly catastrophic default by the US government.
