Lois Wyse: ThirdAge Insider

Dear Lois
My 26-year-old daughter died in a car accident August 16, 1998. I am 51 years old. I've looked several places on the Web for help and support, but most sites I have found pertain to loss of much younger children or infants. Any suggestions?

SIGNE

Dear Signe
I asked one of the column's advisors if there were any special places where your needs might be met, and she gave several names of sites. One that I checked seemed particularly suited for your needs. It is GriefNet, and among its discussion groups is an email one for parents who have lost adult children. Check it because they have more than 20 different email discussion groups under this heading. I do hope you find some solace there.

Dear Lois
In reply to some grandparents who wonder why they can't relate to grandchildren, I'd say the problem is that the grandparents are too old. Many young women today are having their first child at age 35 or 40 when they should be enjoying their own grandchildren. When two generations are skipped, the supposed grandparent should be designated "great grandparent" and be relieved of grandparenting.

Dear Sam
No, Sam, the real problem is that none of us has a voice in becoming grandparents. It's not done with our calendar, our clock, or our desires. So we all have to take what we get. We're just not always happy with what we get or when we get it.
