Variety and Fun Fortunately, walking affords you many options. Once you've reached a point where you can walk a mile or so with relative ease, you can begin varying the intensity. Walking hills and/or stairs, in addition to increasing your cardiovascular endurance, is a great way to tone the legs and lose fat. Also focus on increasing the length of your stride and/or increasing your speed.
A successful exercise program requires that it be comfortable and fun--something you look forward to and feel good about afterwards. When you become bored, make slight changes in your routine to keep it exciting. For example, if you always walk the same old route, try a new way with different scenery and your program may become a lot easier and go by more quickly. Experiment and find out what works best for you.
More ideas for fun: if you enjoy music, take your favorite music and portable player with you when you walk. Or ask your friends to join you in your fitness program. Getting together with friends for a nice, long walk makes exercising more enjoyable and less of a burden.
