Clear the Decks for Exercise
The most common excuse for not exercising is "I don't have enough time." Yet, some people find the time for consistent exercise -- and enjoying the benefits of looking and feeling great. With good time management and a focus on productivity, you too can make the time for exercise.
Follow these time-saving tips throughout your day and you'll quickly free up the 30-60 minutes needed for an exercise routine.
1. Use a calendar system: Calendar planning systems like Franklin Quest, DayTimer or DayRunner are great for managing projects, people and responsibilities. Start by writing down every commitment you make -- the very moment you make it. Then, transfer that commitment to the date on the calendar when it comes due. You may have a commitment every day for the same thing, like exercise. Be sure that the first page of your planner has a daily system, such as a to-do list, that keeps you energized, focused and moving toward your goals.
2. Plan a week ahead: Organize and plan each week the week before, and each day the day before. Spend about 30 minutes on your week plan, then 10 minutes the night before or at the beginning of each day. Write down your short-term goals, as well as what you need to do to accomplish them.
3. Use your first hour wisely: It's common to waste the first hour of every day with procrastination. Before you know it, that extra cup of coffee, reading the newspaper and socializing have cut into your productivity and momentum. Instead, pick the hardest task you must complete that day, or the one you look forward to the least, and DO IT FIRST. (You're going to have to do it sometime, so you might as well get it out of the way.) Completing this task will take a huge weight off your chest and start your day with an excellent confidence-booster.
