Nuts and Bolts

Paying attention to the nuts and bolts of your financial transactions--even earnings and taxes--can save you money in the long run. This week, Jeff offers two examples of details you don't want to miss.

Dear Jeff:
I would like to communicate with a Social Security expert. I filed for early Social Security benefits 16 months ago. I turned 62 on Oct 12, 1997, and still have not seen a check. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has told me that since I owned my own business they do not intend to pay me. I have involved two senators and two representatives and have written directly to Commissioner Apfel, and the only answer I get is "They are working on it." What can I do now to expedite my social security benefit? I am desperately in need of help.

Jeff Says:
There could be a number of reasons why you have not received social security benefits. The first reason that comes to mind is government bureaucracy--and history could certainly support this supposition. However, I've been very pleased with the service, courtesy and promptness of the SSA. The SSA has been very helpful when I have contacted them regarding the needs of a number of my clients.

Would you believe that the SSA is also rather progressive? It's true--really! If you want to see for yourself, just visit their Web site. The site contains a lot of useful information, but the most useful tool for your particular situation is the ability to request a Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement (PEBES) online.

You should expect to receive the report in about two or three weeks. The PEBES contains a complete earnings and Social Security tax history and calculates estimates of your retirement, survivors, and disability benefits. Your first step should be to obtain your personal PEBES so you can review your personal reported earnings and expected benefits. Of course, you will only be entitled to benefits if you have, in fact, paid social security taxes during your working years.

Next, contact your local Social Security office and visit them personally. Take your PEBES with you and review it with them. If you still do not get any satisfaction, then you may want to consider seeking help from an attorney. It is unfortunate that you are experiencing your problems with the SSA, but I am confident that this is atypical.
