4 Steps to Speedy Surfing

Slow surfing costs you time and money--and may even cause enough frustration to point you offline in your quest for information. After all, no one likes to wait.

Many different factors influence how fast Web pages load onto your computer. Minimize their effects with the following four steps.

Step 1: Get a Faster Modem
Not surprisingly, one of the best ways to increase surfing speed is to use a faster modem. Below are the modem types currently available.

  • Cable modem: The fastest modem on the market. However, you must check with your local cable company to see if they support it.

  • 56K: Not everyone supports this speed, so before you upgrade, double-check with your ISP and phone company.

  • 33.6K: Pretty good.

  • 28.8K: Not bad.

  • 14.4K: You should really consider upgrading.

  • Lower than that: Stone Age. Get a faster modem!
