What NOT To Say To Cancer Patients

Unfortunately, some form of cancer will affect one out every two Americans in their lifetime.

Unless you've been a cancer patient yourself, you can't imagine the stress that a cancer diagnosis brings. We all have friends or family members who can say the wrong things at the wrong times, but with cancer patients it is especially important to be mindful of what you say.

No matter what stage of cancer, its always going to be about the patient and how theyre feeling, not you. Here are some universal tips to help you make conversation with and around cancer patients:

People deal with cancer in totally different ways; its your job to make them feel as comfortable as you can. Sometimes that means being their shoulder to cry on, while other times it means that you should talk with them as though nothing has gone wrong.

Its ok to show that youre shaken up by the news too. Show a little emotion, cry if you need to. But remember, it is NOT about you, its about them. Dont put them in the position of having to console you.

Remember, your loved one's battle with cancer is likely to be long, and you need to be there every step of the way. So dont act like its all over from the second you hear the news. Fight the battle with them be as upbeat and defiant as they are.

On that note, never ever mention the odds. The probability of surviving is not something that any cancer patient wants to think about. This is a time when being positive and optimistic is required of all. When patients begin treatment, its time to put on your happy face again. They are going be hit hard by treatment, and it's important to remind them that they are beautiful no matter how they look at the moment. If one of your loved ones is diagnosed with cancer, the disease doesn't only affect them. It also means you have to step up and help them recover. Part of your job is to provide a comfortable and safe environment for your loved one, so he or she can get better. That might mean holding your tongue sometimes, but in the end it's worth the effort.
