Colon Cancer Scare for Americas Doctor

Why do bad things happen to healthy people?

If you live on planet earth you know how diligent Dr. Mehmet Oz is about his health. Deemed Americas Doctor by Queen Oprah herself, Dr. Oz is the countrys defacto authority on anything from life-threatening illness to acne.

You can imagine how shocked he (and everyone else) was when after his 50th birthday his doctor found an adenomatous polyp, or precancerous growth, inside his intestine.

Theres a lot of tension, Oz says. Its frustratingI have done everything rightWhy did this happen to me?

However, in true fashion of his mentor, Oprah, Oz has found the silver lining:

"The only thing holding me back from a terrible outcome is the dumb luck that I checked myself out for the show. I would have put this off, like a lot of people. But I bet this saved my life."

Oz also claims that Winfrey, 56, was inspired to make an appointment for a colonoscopy herself. Shed been putting it off, like I would have done. But she saw how important it is to have early detection.

Dr. Oz and Oprah arent the only ones stressing the importance of people over 50 getting screened. Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society, states: I cannot overstress urging all normal-risk persons age 50 and above to start some kind of routine colon cancer screening. Next to lung cancer, it is the most preventable cause of cancer death.

Dr. Oz is to be screened again in three months, and then every five years after that. The best-selling author will talk about his health scare on The Dr. Oz Show's Sept. 7 season premiere.
